Background and experience
Founded in 1961 and now integrated into a new innovative public higher education and research establishment (since January 2022),
Nantes Université (Nantes U) is a major centre of higher education and research in Region Pays de la Loire.
Nantes Université is, thanks to the teaching of all fields of knowledge (arts, letters, philosophy, history), one of the great French multidisciplinary universities.
Strongly supported by the local ecosystem and civil society, Nantes U strengthens the axes of excellence of Nantes’ research.
It develops new themes and puts innovation at the service of society. It offers new opportunities to its students by breaking down barriers between ways of thinking, cultures and practices.
As a member of the European University of Wellbeing EUniWell
(

it contributes to the construction of Europe and demonstrates the major role of universities in the transformation of society.
Nantes U is organised into 4 colleges (Society, Health, Humanities and Science/Technology), bringing together 43,000 students and 7,800 staff,
as well as 40 laboratories and high-level research structures. It cooperates closely with regional socio-economic stakeholders in order to promote quality education,
knowledge dissemination, value creation through research and digital and technological transfer. In addition, local authorities and companies join forces with Nantes U
to meet the needs of the region and the regional employment pool.
The University of Nantes is a public institution of a scientific, cultural and professional public institution (EPS CP) led by a president elected by its board of directors.
The governance of the university is democratic. The elected members of the university community represent the staff, students and partners.
They collectively make all decisions concerning the university. Two levels of decision-making coexist: the executive, represented by the president and her team;
the legislative, represented by the councils.
Nantes University’s main principles of intervention are fourfold:
- To succeed in the challenge of excellence for a university open to all.
- To be a European player in higher education and international research.
- To be fully integrated into the socio-economic development of its territories.
- To develop interdisciplinary research that is distinguished by its impact on society.
