University of Tirana

The University of Tirana was established by the decision of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania, no. 207, dated 30.05.1957 as “State University of Tirana”. Currently, the University of Tirana is the largest university in the country. It consists of six faculties and approximately 22,000 students. Thanks to its tradition, high level of qualification, training and certification, the University of Tirana remains the most sought-after university in Albania. It is the first choice for most students graduating from high schools in the Republic of Albania and Albanian-speaking lands outside its national borders.

UT was praised by the President of the Republic with the “Order of Honour of the Nation”, with a quote for the extraordinary contribution to the development of science, education, culture and economy of Albania, with decree no. 1959, dated 19.11.1997.

One of the goals and objectives of the University of Tirana is its recognition at international levels. In this context, in some of the dependent institutions, bachelor and master programs in English have been introduced, aiming at a continuous increase. UT is a partner institution in several European Commission cooperation programs such as Tempus, Erasmus Mundus Action 2, IPA, respectively: Join EU-SEE, Basileus, Pacinno, Eureka, Tempus Interface. From these projects has benefited a considerable number in all structures of UT as students of bachelor, master and doctoral levels, academic staff and administrative staff.

UT has also signed many cooperation agreements with various universities and institutions at national, European and world level. These framework agreements aim at academic and student exchanges, joint research programs, academic exchanges in publications, journals, organizing various conferences, etc. UT is also a member of many foreign networks such as AUF, UNICA, UNIMED, CMU, etc., making it a leading University not only in the country but also in the Western Balkans region.

The University of Tirana aims to be one of the best models of public higher education institutions in the country and in the region characterized by rigorous academic achievement and in-depth scientific research; a university of first choice for students of different levels of study making a direct contribution to improving their lives and society. The University of Tirana is a public university which offers a wide range of study programs at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The University of Tirana contributes to the development of society through the three main pillars of the mission of public higher education; research, education and services to the public, elements which complement each other best. The University of Tirana offers education with a focus on students and stimulating their personality; and intellectual growth to enable them to have a productive career in the future and responsible citizens in an increasingly global society.

Within the Erasmus + KA171 program, the University of Tirana currently counts 115 partner universities from EU countries, where students and academic staff are actively exchanged with prestigious universities. The mobility’s developed by the academic staff (for teaching or training) have an impact on their professional development, the expansion of the network of collaborators, influence the academic-scientific plan, offering opportunities for joint scientific research, etc.

Also, the University of Tirana has signed bilateral agreements and memorandum of understanding and cooperation with many prestigious institutions in the Region, Europe and other geographical areas, with the objective of establishing an academic dialogue, promoting institutional cooperation starting from student exchange and staff, exchange of experiences and best practices, organization of joint activities and participation in joint research projects. Currently UT has 100 active cooperation agreements with universities and institutions around the world.
